Birds of a Feather

In honour of its 75th Anniversary, a Big Reunion is being organized in June for my High School.

I’ve lost contact with most of the people I knew back then, but this has been an opportunity to reconnect with at least one good friend, Rosanne. She’s the “witch” who taught me Cartomancy (how to tell fortunes using an ordinary deck of playing cards).

Here is part of a letter I wrote to her recently:

The reunion is just a few weeks away. I can’t decide if I’m looking forward to it or not. It’s certainly going to be strange seeing these people after all these years.

I took another look at the attendees list. It’s grown a little bit: 14 for 1978, 8 for 1979. What’s surprising, though probably shouldn’t be considering the number of grads there were in each year, is how FEW names I recognize!

How do you think people would react if I showed up with Purple Hair? I’ve done it from time to time over the last couple of years. It’s almost time to do something about the grey, and I’m trying to decide if I should go “natural” (dark brown) or “funky” (dark purple).

She replied:

Go purple! Mine is fading out right now and I may redo before I go down. My 13-year-old and I did it purple about a month ago for team champs (well hers was for team champs). I did mine because I was bored with brown and if I go fake, I go fake big time (but then again, I did wild temp colours in high school and university too).

Has it really been 25 years since we saw each other last??

As for the hair, I might go all out and do it in stripes of Black, Heliotrope (purple), and Scarlet (red). Those were the Official School Colours, with the initials B.H.S. representing the name of the school which stood on the same ground before my school was built back in 1927.
