Computer Woes!

So a couple of months ago, the power supply on Pandora, my P4(1.6Ghz)-based computer, burned out. About the same time, we had closets installed in the bedroom, so all the stuff that was in the bedroom got moved to the office so the installation could take place. That meant I couldn’t even GET to the computer to find out what kind of power supply I needed to replace.

A few weeks ago, I finally dug out the computer, opened it up, did some research and ordered a Diablotek 400W power supply from Tiger Direct. When it arrived, I tried to install it, and discovered it had a 24-pin motherboard connector. The motherboard itself needs a 20-pin connector, along with a separate 4-pin connector for the CPU. *SIGH*

So I got back online and ordered a Coolmax 400W power supply with a 20-/24-pin connector. When it arrived, I noticed how the connector worked: 4 pins slip off. SO I looked again at the Diablotek connector… IT’S THE SAME! *DAMN* I didn’t need to order the second power supply after all.

So last night I installed the Diablotek PS (it’s slightly better than the Coolmax).

The Bad News is that the computer is still not working! There’s power flowing through the system now, but I’m not getting any boot activity. I guess more than just the power supply took a hit. Unfortunately, I don’t have the proper equipment to test what else might be wrong, and I don’t have the patience or money to keep buying new parts to fix things. What I really need is a place to take the heap of metal and electronic bits that can run a Level 3 Diagnostic Scan and tell me what’s working and what’s anchor fodder!

I just hope my hard drive isn’t fried, because I have a lot of important data on there!! Which reminds me I should do a back up of the other computer as soon as possible (maybe tonight) to make sure I don’t lose EVERYTHING!)
