Lunch Time Question

So on the weekend, I saw my Dad perform as Matthew Harrison Brady in a community theatre production of Inherit the Wind. In one scene, he eats a “box lunch” consisting of a cheese sandwich and an apple.

It’s also my Dad’s lunch between shows, so he had it with him when we met up after the matinee. It looked odd to me, because it was cut into quarters… as squares, not triangles like I normally do. Dad said that because it was a prop for the show, it was done in the style that would have been appropriate for the time period!

We had an interesting discussion about this with my Mom at dinner. She said that cutting triangles is a relatively modern thing. She also said they used to cut triangles for boys, and squares for girls. We made lots of jokes about dangerous pointy triangle sandwiches!

Question: How do YOU cut your sandwiches?

If you cut them into quarters, do you do it cross-wise, like a plus-sign “+”? Or diagonally, like a letter “X”?

If you cut them in half, do you do it cross-wise, making two rectangles? Or diagonally, making two triangles?
