Okay, so you know how we say “no pun intended” when we say something that’s kind of funny but not necessarily in the context we meant?
For example:
Someone asked me “How was your week?”.
I replied, “Well, I gave it mixed reviews, no pun intended. I got a lot accomplished on my deck, and I had my Annual Review at work, which was a Good News/Bad News situation.”.
According to the Merriam-Webster© OnLine Collegiate® Dictionary, a pun is “the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound.” To me, at least, that mention of a review of the week that included a Review is something, but it’s not really a pun.
But what is it?
