VERONICA :
Pronounced: ve-RAWN-i-ka
Origin(s): Latin, Greek, English, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish
Meaning: “Honest image”, from the Ecclesiastical Latin phrase vera icon. According to Biblical legend, a maiden handed Christ her handkerchief on the way to Calvary. His likeness miraculously appeared on the handkerchief, thus she received her name: Veronica. Film actress Veronica Lake, known mostly for the films she made while with Paramount during World War II, was popular with the soldiers, and her haircut was popular with their girlfriends.
VINCENT :
Pronounced: VIN-sent
Origin(s): Latin, English, French, Dutch, Danish, Swedish
Meaning: “Conquering,” from the Roman name Vincentius, which was from Latin vincere “to conquer”. The brief, turbulent, and tragic life of Post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh, who mutilated his left ear in the course of his first attack of dementia, is thought to epitomize the mad genius legend. Film and stage actor Vincent Price had a respectable screen career before becoming king of horror with such films as House of Wax (1953) and The House of Usher (1960).
Information sources include Behind the Name, Baby Zone, and Fact Monster. I don’t know why I decided to do this little project, but I’m going to post two names each day for the month of October. The names for each day will begin with same letter, and I’ll work my way through the alphabet until I do “Z” on October 26th. The names for the rest of the month will come from reader submissions.
