{"id":374,"date":"2003-04-27T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-04-27T21:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/badinage.com\/journal\/?p=374"},"modified":"2003-04-27T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2003-04-27T21:00:00","slug":"a-few-things-on-my-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/badinage.com\/journal\/2003-04\/374-a-few-things-on-my-mind","title":{"rendered":"A few things on my mind&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I keep stacking things on my desk with the intention of commenting on them, but as is everything in life I get side-tracked and the pile just gets bigger and bigger and&#8230; Anyway, here are a couple of things off the top.<\/p>\n<hr WIDTH=\"33%\">\nI was watching an episode of <a HREF=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/Title?0189392\">&#8220;Big Wolf on Campus&#8221;<\/a> and they had this witch the three heroes were trying to vanquish. But when the wolfboy recited the vanquishing spell it didn&#8217;t work until he said, <i>&#8220;So mote it be.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always felt this to be a pretentious thing do to, especially when spouted by <b>Wannabe Witches<\/b> (okay, I really have <b>one particular<\/b> Wannabe Witch in mind), but they all seem to do it. Curiosity getting the better of me, I looked it up in the dictionary. Or tried to, since the <i>Concise Oxford Dictionary<\/i>, what I consider to be my authority for spelling and other lexicographical arbitration, didn&#8217;t have it.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I finally found it. According to the <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/\">Merriam-Webster Online<\/a>&#8230;<br \/>\n<font COLOR=\"#4400AA\">Main Entry: <b>mote<\/b><br \/>\nPronunciation: &#8216;mOt<br \/>\nFunction: <i>verbal auxiliary<\/i><br \/>\nEtymology: Middle English, from Old English <i>mOtan<\/i> to be allowed to &#8212; more at MUST<br \/>\nDate: before 12th century<br \/>\n<i>archaic<\/i> : MAY, MIGHT<\/font><\/p>\n<p>Okay, so THAT makes sense.<\/p>\n<hr WIDTH=\"33%\">\nThe following humorous episode is brought to you courtesy the sample box of <b><a HREF-\"http:\/\/www.kelloggs.com\/\">Kellogg&#8217;s<\/a> Pop-Tarts, topped with REAL Chocolate Chips<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><font COLOR=\"#FF0088\"><b>HEATING INSTRUCTIONS<\/b><\/font><br \/>\n<font COLOR=\"#FF0000\"><b>REMOVE<\/b><\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0088\"> pastry from pouch. <\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0000\"><b>MAKE SURE MOM OR DAD<\/b><\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0088\"> is with you when you use the microwave or toaster. <\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0000\"><b>MICROWAVE<\/b><\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0088\"> on high for a <b>maximum<\/b> of <b>3<\/b> seconds <\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0000\"><b>OR HEAT IN TOASTER<\/b><\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0088\"> with setting as <b>LOW<\/b> as it can go. Place toaster in a safe, open spot and make sure it&#8217;s clean inside (possible fire risk). <\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0000\"><b>WAIT 2 TO 3 MINUTES<\/b><\/font><font COLOR=\"#FF0088\"> to cool pastry, then <b>carefully<\/b> remove from appliance (can cause burns).<\/font><br \/>\n<font SIZE=\"-2\"><i>(Emphasis and colour changes are as they appear on the box!)<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n<p>A few things come to mind. Do <b>**I**<\/b>, being a fully-constituted adult in the eyes of the law, still have to have my Mom or Dad present when I use the microwave or toaster? What about poor, unfortunately <b>orphans<\/b>? Do they get to eat Pop-Tarts at all? And finally, if you have to wait 2 to 3 minutes to cool the pastry before you can take it out of the appliance, <b>what&#8217;s the point<\/b> of heating it in the first place?
