In <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.factmonster.com\/ce6\/ent\/A0814636.html\">Greek mythology virtuous <b>Daphne<\/b><\/a> was a nymph transformed into a laurel tree by her father in order that she might escape the pursuit of Apollo. <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.factmonster.com\/ce6\/ent\/A0821379.html\"><b>Daphne Du Maurier<\/b><\/a>, 1907-89, was the author of popular novels, including <i>Jamaica Inn<\/i> (1936) and <i>Rebecca<\/i> (1938).<\/p>\n<p><font SIZE=+2 COLOR=\"#0066FF\"><b> DOUGLAS :<\/b><\/font><br \/>\n<i>Pronounced:<\/i> DUG-lus<br \/>\n<i>Origin(s):<\/i> Scottish, English, Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Irish<br \/>\n<i>Meaning:<\/i> Dweller by the dark stream; Dark stranger; &#8220;From the dark river&#8221; or &#8220;blood river&#8221; from Gaelic <i>dubh<\/i> &#8220;dark&#8221; and <i>glais<\/i> &#8220;water, river&#8221;. Douglas was originally a river name, the site of a particularly bloody battle, which then became a Scottish surname. The surname belonged to a powerful line of Scottish earls. The Scottish Douglas clan had two historical branches: Black Douglases and Red Douglases. The lords of these clans figure in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.factmonster.com\/ce6\/people\/A0844116.html\">Sir Walter Scott<\/a>&#8216;s novels. <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.factmonster.com\/ipka\/A0900559.html\"><b>Douglas Adams<\/b><\/a> was a British author who wrote <i>The Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/i> series of books.<\/p>\n<p><font SIZE=-2>Information sources include <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.behindthename.com\/\">Behind the Name<\/a> and <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.babyzone.com\/babynames\/\">Baby Zone<\/a>. I don&#8217;t know why I decided to do this little project, but I&#8217;m going to post two names each day for the month of October. The names for each day will begin with same letter, and I&#8217;ll work my way through the alphabet until I do &#8220;Z&#8221; on October 26th.
