I don’t know if it’s been a crappy or productive weekend.
Yesterday, I went to Christine’s to help her housemate Alex redo the shingles on the roof of the garage. He had never done it before, and I had never done it before, so we were both learning– from the video he had– as we went along. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it turned out to be. There ARE a few tricky things about doing roofs (rooves?), but we didn’t encounter them on this job.
It has given me the confidence to tackle the shingles on the roof of my front porch. And the roof of my shed, or rather the roof of the shed that will replace my current shed. Some time. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not next week, or even in a month or two after the new deck is built. Maybe it will be one of next year’s jobs, since it doesn’t look like the renovation work on the upstairs will actually be ready to start then.
Speaking of the deck, I’m going BACK into the design stage again, to fine tune things. I’ve been doing a little bit of reading about how to construct a deck, and I’ve changed my mind about the mechanics of some of the pieces, like the stairs. That is going to change the need for posts and foundations, and that means I need to change the locations of the posts. Better to do it now BEFORE I arrange to have the posts dug! Besides which, each extraneous post I can get rid of saves me $50 plus the cost of materials!
I’m hoping to take my bike to work– it’s not far, just 8.6 km, uphill, against the wind, about 25 minutes door to door– IF I manage to get to bed early enough to get a decent night’s sleep, and IF the weather holds and there are no heat or humidity or smog advisories for the day…
