Update on the Power Outage Affecting Ontario and the northeastern United States – 2003-08-18 5:30 pm

While power has been restored throughout the region, electrical generation and transmission systems are still not operating at full capacity. In order to avoid placing an undue strain on the recently restored power system, Ontario public authorities have requested that businesses focus on essential services and operate at 50 percent capacity. In New York and New Jersey, public authorities have announced that their systems will be operational tomorrow.

In all areas, as employees return to work, managers should use their discretion and take the steps necessary to ensure that all staff reduce power consumption and assist in the conservation effort.

Important Information for Work Tomorrow
Working Environment: in accordance with Ontario public authorities requests, we will be working with property managers to conserve energy. At sites in Ontario, employees coming to work should expect to find fewer elevators in operation and all air-conditioning systems will be set at 25°C (78°F) ensuring a safe environment for staff and customers. Employees are asked to ensure that systems are set at this temperature. In order to make working more comfortable, employees reporting to work tomorrow should consider wearing casual clothes. Further, office lighting conservation practices will be used and, wherever possible, exterior signage will be turned off. Managers should ensure that they make efforts to conserve energy at work sites and should meet with staff first thing tomorrow morning to identify ways to conserve energy without compromising service, safety and security. Please remember to turn out all lights as you leave work.
