Peggy Xooz Got Married?

My High School Reunion is coming up this weekend; the Weird Dreams have started!

Last night, I had a strange dream indeed.

I remember being on a train, going from Toronto to Belleville, as I used to do when I first went away to university. But there were a few really odd things about this train in particular.

First, my mother was travelling with me.

Second, the girl I had the hots for was also on the train. She seemed to be travelling with a male companion who was either a husband or long-time boyfriend.

As for the train itself, it seemed more like a cruise ship than a passenger train. It might even have been a freight train, because it didn’t seem to have rows of seats like a normal passenger train does. That is really strange when you consider it’s only a two-hour trip.

My mother and I were facing sideways to the direction the train was travelling, which was left to right, west to east so that we were facing north. The boyfriend was a pretty-boy/body-builder type, and was passing the time doing his workout routine off to one side.

But I distinctly noticed the girl, who seemed to have grown more beautiful in the intervening 25 years since I last saw her, was looking at me, not at the boyfriend. Another odd thing was that she seemed to be in a room behind a door, looking out at me through the window, like it was a stateroom or something like that.

My mother got up to go for a stroll, and when she came back, she had a book with her. It was the girl’s book, but I have no idea where my mother got it. She opened it up, and had me read a section. It was addressed to the girl— kind of like a dedication, but it was near the back of the book and not at the front— from either the author or a girlfriend of the girl. The passage was some sort of advice to her, and it had something to do with me, identifying me specifically if not explicitly by name.

And I was trying to read it as my mother held the book, and I kept starting and starting over like when you are reading a book but you keep getting distracted or nodding off to sleep. I must have been waking up at that point, because I distinctly remember thinking how silly it was to be trying so hard to read something on a piece of paper in a dream— I think I knew I was dreaming then.

Later in the dream (or was it an entirely different dream?), the girl and I were dancing at the reunion. We actually started having an actual conversation just like two actual adults might actually have. We were having such a good time just talking to each other— something we never did when we were in high school— that we decided to leave the auditorium and go for a walk to continue our conversation. One thing lead to another, and it being a warm, spring evening we ended up making my adolescent dreams and her adolescent nightmares come true…

So far, my girlfriend from university hasn’t made an appearance in these dreams.

Whatever happens this weekend, I’ll try to take lots of pictures and I’ll let you see what kind of losers these people have become in the last 25 years!
