Do you ever have one of those incredibly rare absolutely fantastic days where EVERYTHING just seems to go your way?
Today seems to be one of those days for me!
— I got up at a decent hour this morning, and then lazed around in bed, doing all those laze-around-in-bed activities [at least the ones you don’t need a partner for! 8-) !]
— around my usual departure time, I left the house, grabbing my book [Change of Command by Elizabeth Moon] and my bike helmet, and went to catch the bus.
— A bus, a subway, and another bus, followed by a short walk, and I arrived at my destination, only to find out that the bike shop didn’t open for another 40 minutes. Then I discovered that the bagel shop across the road– where I had intended to cool my hoofies while I waited for the bike shop to open– had closed all permanent-like. [Okay, so maybe NOT everything was going my way…]
— So I wandered around the building supply store for a while, then sat on the concrete under the gas station sign and read my book until the bike shop opened. I’m nearing the end, so the story is starting to get really exciting!
— Once the bike shop opened– well, you knew it had to soon, didn’t you?– I picked up my bike. It was in for a Spring Tune Up. I rode home from the bike shop– a good 40-minute workout riding against the wind!
— When I got home, I discovered that the building supply place (not the one I had wandered around) had delivered the concrete blocks that I had ordered so I can build the tiered garden in my front yard. Not only that, but they had put them in exactly wonderful places. The bigger skid is near the house on the front lawn just off the edge of the driveway. And the smaller skid is next to the house on the other side of the front step but completely out of the way of the car! I was so happy that I actually phoned the supplier and THANKED THEM for putting them where they did. The Customer Service rep said I was the first person who had ever called for that reason!
So think about it… I was happy, so I called and thanked them, and made at least three other people happy: the Customer Service rep, the Delivery Driver, and the Delivery Driver’s Manager, because they will all be told about my call. BUT… do you think the Customer Service rep will keep my call to herself? No. Most likely, it will also be the talk of the office for the day, so who knows HOW MANY people will actually be a little bit happier today. And just because somebody did something nice. But I digress.
— So at this point, I’m a bit ahead of my schedule, because the concrete was supposed to have been delivered around noon. And I’m sweaty from my bike ride, though it’s a good, healthy kind of sweat. Shower Time!
— After my shower, I got on the computer, downloaded a number of pornographic pictures from the binaries newsgroups, checked my e-mail, and generally wasted a lot of time. The usenet will do that to you! So I took a break for lunch: smoked salmon on grumpy-grain bread. Yum!
— But I had stuff to do, so when my sandwich was done, I got back on the computer. I finished work on the May issue of The Zero Card (yeah, I know it’s the 15th of the month already… if it’s such a Big Fucking Deal to you, where’s YOUR contribution to the cause to see that it gets published on time??), and worked on Blue Devils, the Toronto Dark Writers’ Group chapbook.
— By this time, it was after two o’clock, so I had to get going because I still had a few things to do before I went in to the office. (I’m working the Late Shift today!) I put the guys in their cages, and drove off, but not before filling the outside bird feeder and tossing some peanuts to the bushy-tailed rats.
— I went to the Etobicoke Building Dept. and got the “standard details” drawings for my deck. I also found out they won’t approve the use of screwable foundation posts. Apparently, they have two major problems: twisting and settling. Neither of which I want to worry about or deal with, so it looks like I’ll be pouring concrete foundations for the new deck.
— Then I dropped off the negative for the chapbook cover image. It will be ready in a week or so.
— And that was about the rest of my chores, so I drove to the office, and here I am!
And now I’m exhausted, so I may just sit here at my desk and vegetate for a while. I can do that, since there’s nobody in my office now. Anybody that is here is actually in another office on another floor.
ZZZzzz…
