October Name Project: I

IGNATZ :
Pronounced: IG-natz
Origin(s): German, Latin
Meaning: German form of IGNATIUS: From the Roman family name Egnatius, which was possibly derived from Latin ignis “fire”. This was the name of several early saints, including the third bishop of Antioch who was thrown to wild beasts by emperor Trajan, and by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. In George Herriman’s classic comic strip, Krazy Kat, a cat of indeterminate sex, was in love with Ignatz Mouse. Ignatz, in turn, had a somewhat antagonistic attitude toward Krazy, which he demonstrated by tossing bricks at her head.

INGRID :
Pronounced: ING-rid
Origin(s): Scandinavian, Norse, German
Meaning: “Beauty of Froy,” “Ing’s daughter,” or “Ing is beautiful” from the name of the Norse and Germanic fertility god, ING (known in Scandinavia as Yngvi Freyr), combined with Old Norse fríðr “beautiful”. Swedish film and stage actress Ingrid Bergman, who often portrayed strong, sophisticated women, is probably best known for playing opposite Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca (1942).

Information sources include Behind the Name, Baby Zone, and Fact Monster. I don’t know why I decided to do this little project, but I’m going to post two names each day for the month of October. The names for each day will begin with same letter, and I’ll work my way through the alphabet until I do “Z” on October 26th. The names for the rest of the month will come from reader submissions.
