This morning I was listening to the radio and they had a feature item about how there were experiments going on to “cure peanut allergies.”
Most of the story sounded quite good, until the final comment, which I thought was quite stupid.
Essentially, what the scientists are doing is giving children small doses of peanuts, and increasing the doses over time. While it arguably doesn’t “cure” the allergy, it does desensitize the child to the point where they can eat a few peanuts (I think 10 was the number they mentioned) without going into anaphalactic shock.
The problem is that in order to maintain the desensitivity, the child must continue to eat about 5 peanuts a day. But, and here is the stupid part, they are working on developing a PILL to deliver the daily dose required!!! Um, huh? Say what?
Is it just me, or is the world going crazy?
