Mainly because I’ve frozen my ass off out there!!
[Yesterday’s report:]
I hope all of you are keeping relatively warm in this recent cold snap. We are trying our best at Cedar Grove, but it hasn’t been easy. In spite of having the thermostat set to an environmentally-friendly 70°F (21°C), the temperature readings were down to 59°F-61°F (15°C-16°C) when we got up this morning!!
It’s not that the furnace isn’t working, it’s just not working well! If you go into the furnace room, the furnace is on, and pumping out heat; it just doesn’t seem to be pumping it to where it’s needed in the house. The pipe to the chimney is too hot too touch, and the pipes to the ducts don’t feel very hot at all.
Since this is the first time we’ve noticed the lack of heat, and the furnace seems to be working, and it WAS exceptionally cold out the other night, and nothing else seems to have changed, I don’t know if we really have a problem other than having an old, not-so-efficient furnace which we’re planning to replace this year anyway BUT AFTER we’ve had the energy assessment done so we can take advantage of government grants available to us.
I called a heating company (one we spoke to at the Home Show and will probably give our business to when the time comes), but they really couldn’t give me any advice other than to check the filters to see if they might be clogged. They shouldn’t be since I replaced them in September or October, but still… It does seem like SOMETHING is blocking the ducts. Maybe those mice we poisioned (due to lack of choice on evicting them otherwise) have crawled into the ducts to die and are exacting their revenge on us?
According to the 14-day trend on the Weather Network web site, the rest of the week will be warmer (how could it not?), Saturday will be really cold again, and then warmer again after that.
[Today’s update:] I got my bum back!!
Well, I learned MY lesson! Fortunately, I didn’t have to learn it the hard or expensive way. Yesterday, I called the HVAC company we met at the Home Show to ask about what might be wrong with our furnace. They weren’t particularly helpful, but did steer me in the direction of a few things I could try to help diagnose the problem. So on the way home from work yesterday, I stopped in at Home Despot, and got some things. Later that evening…
*** I CHANGED THE FILTER ON THE FURNACE ***
And wouldn’t you know? IT’S WORKING AGAIN!! The transformation was simply amazing. The air flow was finally getting through, and the temperature came back up quickly. That’s how clogged the previous filter, which I had changed in [checking notes for actual date…] mid-November, had become!
B-R-C was all set to bring in an emergency crew to replace the furnace, when all it took was replacing a $3.50 filter. Instead, I picked up a 3-pack of filters, and have made a note in my calendar to change the furnace filter on the 3rd Saturday of the month when the seasons change, around the time that the Equinox or Solstice occurs. (Mental note: that’s also when the Fetish Masquerade takes place… heh heh heh)
What do you think of that?
More snow on the way this afternoon, hope you are keeping warm!
