More Renos

I just spent the majority of my vacation over March Break fixing my kitchen. What started as plans to simply paint the room turned into a bigger renovation job.

No surprise that there were surprises when we removed the ugly imitation tile board from the walls. We found another layer of even uglier imitation tile board! This one was actually glued to the wall, so removing it exposed yet another set of challenges.

The first challenge was repairing deteriorated plaster and patching holes. My plaster repair skills are coming along quite nicely if I do say so myself. It’s a very messy process; I think I’m still coughing up plaster dust from that operation!

The second challenge was that we could not remove all of the old dried adhesive and have discovered that it causes discolouration that is bleeding through the primer coat. We’ve decided to use a Debbie Travis painting technique, either sponging or ragging, to try to hide the blemishes. At this point, the walls have been patched and primed, and we’re hoping to be ready to paint tonight.

The third challenge was to avoid a case of the “while you’re at its.” Investigation shows the bulkhead over the cabinets is empty space, so we want to remove the bulkhead and replace it with storage. We also want to add cabinets over and beside the fridge. Chocoholic, who hated the little bit of mess and disorganization caused when we started the job, was all gung-ho to rip out the bulkheads right now. But because the repairs to the walls took so long, I was tired of all the work and felt it better to call a halt to the work we are doing now, finish the painting and get resettled in the kitchen for a while. If we don’t, it’s going to seem like the job is just dragging on forever! This also gives us time to properly plan and design what will be done.

Now, my NEXT QUESTION:

Do you have any suggestions or recommendations on what kind of hooks or tool rack I could use to hang the garden tools in the new shed?
