Last night, Chocoholic and I got together for drinks with her long-time friend Pamela.
We went through the eye and now to figure out what we wanted to do.
My sweetie was interested in something mellow, like folk or jazz music. Hugh’s Room for folk was one possibility. The Come Up to My Room Lovedesign thing at the Gladstone Hotel also looked interesting.
Pamela really wanted to “go dancing” somewhere. She suggested the CHUM-FM Saturday Night Dance Party at the Courthouse Chamber Lounge. As we listened to the radio on the drive to meet Pamela, the music churned our stomachs. (CHUM-FM always has that effect on me anyway!) We decided that we were going to hijack her and take her somewhere with better music.
I didn’t think they were up to an introduction to Savage. (For starters, we weren’t dressed in black…) But the listing for PADDY MURPHY’S (formerly the Munster House, where the cangoth meets used to be held) looked promising. Supposedly, they were having “Sloppy Seconds w/ DJ Triple X: classic & obscure rock, new wave, indie, etc, w/ vintage videos.” But when we got there, the dumb DJ was just getting his gear set up! “Hang the DJ, hang the DJ!”
So we drove west to see if the Gladstone was a possibility. We could not find any parking anywhere in the area, except for the parking lot of the Price Chopper store around the corner. Not being brave enough to risk being towed away, we drove elsewhere.
We thought we might find something in the King/John/Adelaide area, figuring at least we could walk around. After a dose of ATTITUDE from the bitch standing at the gate to Lucid on John, we got back in the car. (There were people standing around outside so the girls wanted to find out what was going on. All we got in response was a sniff, a look at her clipboard, an “um”… By that point, I had already stomped off down the street. Hey, any place that don’t want me inside is a place I don’t wanna go into even more!) At least I got to peek in the window at Hooters as we walked by!
Ultimately, with nothing better jumping out at us, we headed for the Courthouse. It’s a really nice venue. It’s too bad the music sucked so badly. And the clientele left quite a lot to be desired. Come to think of it, the whole thing reminded me of the discos and dance bars I used to avoid back in the late 80s and early 90s when I was living at Yonge and Eglinton!!
The low point of the evening was when Pamela got hit on by this really annoying greasy macho type. He wouldn’t get the message, and his two buddies weren’t any help, so Chocoholic had to get me to intervene. She told the guy that Pamela was my wife, the mother of our five childrens! Even then I had to physically interject my body between Pamela and this guy before he finally backed off. Then after he got the message, he spent a solid five minutes apologizing to me for hitting on my wife!!
The courthouse is owned/run by the Liberty Group, the same Entertainment Corporation that runs Velvet Underground. “Catering to a wide range of alternative types, from nouveau goths to university preps, the Velvet Underground is a nice change from the ordinary.” Odd that they have “DJ Joe – Spinning New Rock & Hip Hop” on Saturday nights. *PUKE*
After a couple of beer and standing around bored, we finally called it a night around 12:30 am. On a good note, Pamela agreed with us that the Courthouse wasn’t as good as it could have been. Chocoholic and I secretly decided it would be a Way Cool Thing to get all gothed up in our best Victorian finery and go there again with a group.
FYI, Eventually, I’m going to get them to Savage or the Vatikan, but they aren’t quite up to it yet. It would be too much of a shock to their system, especially Pamela.
Dinner with friends next Saturday, out of town the weekend after that, then my brother’s birthday the week after that, but a “goth clubbing night” is definitely in the offing, perhaps March 12th.
