I have found that when I’m doing some programming, and I mean the all-out, heads down, keyboard to the metal right into the guts of the code programming, heavy metal or punk music helps me concentrate best.
So I’m sitting here at the office TRYING to work, but I just can’t seem to concentrate with the NOISE from the management-type (or perhaps management-wannabe) woman who sits in the cubicle across the pathway from MY Dilberthole. This woman is LOUD. LOUD, with a capital LOUD! Talking on the phone… LOUD! Talking to the guy who occupies the other half of my cubicular space… LOUD! Talking to the secretary who sits on the other side of the office ove the wall and behind a bank of file closets… LOUD!
The only thing that seems to work is even louder MUSIC! Me build WALLS OF SOUND! Gotta love my tunes!
But my question is this: why does heavy metal or punk music work best to help build bigger, better, stronger walls? My favourite heads-down programming music is Deep Purple.
