I saw an article in the paper today about how the Toronto Zoo is hurtin’ bad:
“SARS has killed us this year and it’s getting worse, not better,” Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti, who chairs the zoo’s board, told council yesterday.
The zoo board will meet next month to consider money-saving options, including closing for a few months, cutting back on animal-rescue programs and laying off staff, Mammoliti said.
Attendance is down at the zoo by 20 per cent — 85,000 visitors — from normal, and the absence of tourists is to blame. Fear of severe acute respiratory syndrome has left most of Toronto’s attractions, hotels and restaurants unusually empty this tourist season. Source: Torstar News Service
I saw a thing a month ago or so where they had opened up the zoo to allow cyclists to ride the trails through the place. I’m sorry I didn’t know about it ahead of time (or was I busy that day?) because I would have loved to have done that.
I’m going to contact the zoo and suggest they do that again, or see how I could arrange for a special event and take a bunch of friends.
